Career Plans for each Semester

Besides growing and strengthening a Business Alliance at each of the Middle Schools that I serve, (and if you know of strong businesses in our community that may want to support our school, with time or resources or BOTH... please refer them to me and I will follow up with our Brochure and invitation to tour and talk about how we can make this happen!)  I will be going into classrooms to help students sign up for an account with CFNC.org... first they need a school email account, and be able to access it with their password.  Then we will spend time doing a Career Assessment, to narrow down their top 3 Career Interests.

Next semester we plan to have a Career Fair, so that our students can visit and listen to a volunteer (from their top 3 career interests) who will speak about their career, how they got there, maybe what they were like in middle school, how they had to begin taking Reading, Writing, and Math seriously, why they chose their career, some of the pros and cons of that career, etc.  Then Q & A to wrap up.
As a follow up, they will fill out a short Survey to assess the Career Fair and what they gained from it.  Teachers may ask them to write a reflection of their experience in class, or possibly present a project about their top career choice or top 3 choices.

More information about our Superintendent's Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast...

Dr. Tabb serves on the Health Science Career Academy Advisory Board at Athens Dr High School, which is a Business Alliance.  Here is the information on the guest speaker, Mr. Abernathy on Economic Leadership...he shared a lot about trends that will effect what careers/jobs will be available when our middle school students will be in the job market...

Mr. Jones is a Volunteer who helps Mary Phillips High and Sanderson High School, so many of the Carroll students going to Sanderson may benefit from his leadership there. Let's nominate our wonderful Volunteers from Centennial Campus Middle and Carroll Magnet Middle Schools for next year's event to honor them!

Today we honored Volunteers at the Annual Superintendent's Breakfast for School-to-Career initiatives in Wake County Public Schools. Many volunteers came out and our table was full.  Synergy between all at the table was great as we brainstormed questions about how the 4 C's, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity can be applied to skills that are vital for our students/future employees to have in order to help businesses be successful.
Here is a link to a You Tube Channel of Sean Brown, Senior at Middle Creek High, who spoke to us about the Digital Media Career Academy, and shared about his Internship at UNC-TV, where he was able to create his own commercial that will be on the air soon!  https://www.youtube.com/user/frickyfreshboy

Here are some photos taken of parts of the presentation "A Peek Around the Corner-Trends Today that are Certain to Change All our Futures."

Please pass this information to them and ask them to contact me if they would like to join us at this exciting annual event to honor our Volunteers!  TGuinn@wcpss.net

WCPSS and the School-To-Career Council  would like to invite you to the Superintendent’s Breakfast-School-To-Career Volunteer Celebration on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the PNC Arena from 7:30 am – 10:00 am.  Please find the registration link below.  Breakfast will be from 7:30 am – 8:00 am and the program will begin at 8:00 am.  We will be recognizing some of our most outstanding School-To-Career Business Volunteers at the Breakfast who have worked hard to engage our students and assist them in finding future career paths.  WCPSS will give an update on Vision 2020 and participants will have an opportunity to provide input for enhancing Vision 2020.  This Breakfast provides Dr. Merrill, WCPSS Superintendent, the opportunity to thank our Business Volunteers for their significant contributions to WCPSS through School-To-Career.  This year in addition to Dr. Merrill’s comments, we will hear from Mr. Ted Abernathy, Managing Partner with Economic Leadership, LLC.  Mr. Abernathy is a nationally known economic futurist and recognized leader and expert in economic and workforce development trends.  He will provide some interesting and thought provoking comments around the need for business and industry to remain as partners with education as we move further into the 21st century.  We look forward to this incredible opportunity to celebrate the great work our Business Volunteers are doing and also collaborate and strengthen this work moving forward.
